Top cryptos 2025: for Fidelity, it's a challenge between Solana and Ethereum
By Davide Grammatica
On the one hand speed and low operating costs, on the other stronger fundamentals: for Fidelity, 2025 will be the year of Solana and Ethereum
The debate over SOL and ETH
In the recent report “Look Ahead 2025” shared by Fidelity Digital Assets, the crypto arm of the asset giant Fidelity Investments, the outlook for the crypto industry in the coming months was analyzed, putting the developments in the Ethereum and Solana ecosystems particularly under the magnifying glass.
According to Fidelity, the challenge between the two networks will characterize the entire 2025, for a competition whose fruits can be reaped by the entire industry. On one side are the speed and low operational costs offered by Solana, while on the other are the more robust fundamentals of Ethereum. In other words, one expects interesting surprises from the former, but is safer betting long-term on the latter.
The extensive and steady activity of developers, along with the TVL and stablecoin offerings, give Ethereum greater prospects for the long term, but in the short term one cannot ignore Solana’s growing numbers, “pumped up” by factors such as memecoin trading.
“Short-term price trends often revolve around narratives, and Solana may be the most noteworthy contender, in this sense, through 2025, given planned upgrades,” Fidelity said.
They are talking specifically about Firedancer, the update through which Solana aims to further increase the speed of transactions on the network. Ethereum, with Pectra, is also aiming for improved scalability and security for users, but may generate much less enthusiasm in the community, according to the asset manager, as it has no direct influence on the price of ETH.
Another advantage for ETH is ETFs, but even with respect to that, 2025 could be a harbinger of interesting regulatory surprises.
Bitcoin undisputed king
Other talk, however, concerns Bitcoin, which is expected to remain the undisputed kingpin regardless of the macroeconomic scenarios of 2025. Fidelity expects more governments, central banks, and sovereign wealth funds to add BTC to their reserves, as well as Bhutan and El Salvador, for dominance over the sector would then go unchallenged.
The “killer” application of 2025, however, is seen in “tokenization,” the nominal value of which, in 2024 alone, would grow from $8 billion to $14 billion. By 2025, growth to $30 billion is expected.
