Barclays becomes one of the top holders of BlackRock's ETF
Barclays has positioned itself among the main holders of the Bitcoin ETF of BlackRock, according to a 13F document filed with the SEC on December 31.
The British bank declared that it owned $2.47 million worth of shares in the iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT), for a total value of $131 million.
The acquisition represents a new position taken in the fourth quarter of 2024. Previously, Barclays held a small stake in the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC), but it no longer appears in the new report.
However, the weight of IBIT in the bank’s total portfolio remains limited, representing only 0.04% of assets under management, equal to $356.9 billion as of December 31.
Goldman Sachs in the lead, Barclays in the top 10
According to data from Fintel, Barclays ranks among the top ten institutional investors in IBIT. The absolute leader is Goldman Sachs, which has revealed a holding of over 24 million shares, equivalent to approximately $1.3 billion. In addition to IBIT, Goldman also owns shares in Fidelity’s FBTC for $294 million, bringing its total investment in Bitcoin ETFs to over $1.6 billion.
Other notable investors include Paul Tudor Jones‘ Tudor Investment Corporation fund, the trading firm DRW Securities and the State of Wisconsin Investment Board pension fund.
The 13F documents provide a quarterly overview of the shareholdings held by managers with at least $100 million in assets. However, they only include long positions and not short ones, thus offering a partial view of the investment strategy.
