Ethereum: Vitalik Buterin among the candidates for the Nobel Prize?
By Davide Grammatica
As we await the various 2024 Nobel Prize awards, there are those who would bet on Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin as a possible winner
Vitalik Buterin possible Nobel Prize candidate
The founder of Ethereum, Vitalik Buterin, could be among the candidates for the 2024 Nobel Prize in economics. The indiscretion, which is making the rounds on the web in these hours, comes from two well-known American economists, Tyler Cowen and Alex Tabarrok, who hinted, during an episode of their podcast “Marginal Revolution,” how Vitalik could likely be among the favorites for the coveted prize.
The Nobel in question will be awarded on Oct. 14, and, as is well known, the nominees will be made public only once the prize is presented to the winner.
“I have an unusual name, but I suspect you will agree with me: I would give it to Vitalik Buterin, “ Cowen explained, speculating on a papable winner of the Nobel Prize in economics. “He built a platform, created a currency, and could claim to have refuted Ludwig von Mises’ ‘regression theorem’ in the process, obviously following in the footsteps of Satoshi Nakamoto.”
Bitcoin and Ethereum, a revolution to be “rewarded”
Ethereum’s achievements over the years, after all, have certainly not gone unnoticed. The network now has a $293.5 billion market capitalization, and Vitalik continues to be at the forefront of the community to contribute to its development. Just think of his contribution during the “merge” in 2022, when the network went from a proof-of-work to a proof-of-stake consensus mechanism.
“He writes about monetary economics, and there is no economist who has better things to say about the topics he writes about,” Tabarrok, on the other hand, said of Ethereum’s founder.
Of course, Satoshi Nakamoto, creator of Bitcoin, was among the possible winners, but the award cannot be given to an anonymous person. The HBO series on Satoshi released in these hours fits perfectly with these talks, since of identifies the dev Peter Todd behind the mask of the founder. However, the evidence provided, as we have had occasion to comment, leaves much to be desired.
