OpenAI expands: BULLISH or BEARISH scenario for crypto?
By Davide Grammatica
The latest funding round closed by OpenAI does not seem to have pushed up crypto-AI: what is happening?
Cryptos have not responded to OpenAI's growth
Last week, Sam Altman‘s tech giant , OpenAI, closed a new $6.6 billion funding round that resulted in the company being valued at $157 billion. Credit to Microsoft, Nvidia and other global market players, who evidently continue to bet on the potential of artificial intelligence.
“The new funding will enable us to double our leadership in frontier research, increase computing capacity and continue to create tools that help people solve difficult problems,” a statement from OpenAI read.
And the numbers bear this out. OpenAI has experienced growth out of the ordinary, going from being valued at $29 billion in 2023 to $80 billion in early 2024. ChatGPT adoption now embraces 250 million weekly active users, including 11 million subscribers. Revenues, as a result, are also growing, with $11.6 billion estimates for 2025.
Growth to be sustained
However, not all that glitters is gold. There are many challenges to sustaining this growth, especially in a long-term perspective where, as recently announced, the company aims to capture markets globally, targeting Asia. Consider, for example, the operating costs supported by Nvidia’s GPU, which weigh enormously on the balance sheet.
A proof of this could be, indirectly, the behavior of crypto-AIs, i.e., those tokens linked in some way to artificial intelligence. Unlike in the past, in fact, the last major funding to OpenAI did not bring a consequent rise in the tokens in question, which instead reacted as avviane in a classic “sell the news” scenario.
Bullish factors
Paradoxically, however, this financial precariousness could take on “bullish” characteristics should the company be taken over by the lenders themselves. Indeed, several analysts suggest that Microsoft could buy OpenAI within three years to support its growth and global expansion, and the benefits to realities such as Worldcoin could be enormous.
WLD itself , in the past, has moved along the lines of OpenAI’s developments, and if Microsoft were to actually buy the company there are those who think Worldcoin could have a capitalization as much as twenty times larger than it is today.
